CD Review “Thunder” Clark, Miller, Wooten
Okay, so you’re thinking, how musical can a recording be that features three basses playing, many times at the same time, right? I mean, bass is cool, but is there a limit on how much low end one can digest at one time?
If it were anyone else but Stanley, Marcus and Victor the results would probably justify concerns. But Thunder is a remarkable piece of musicianship and virtuosity. The songs have memorable melodies, interesting arrangements and stunning displays of bass improvisation.
All the songs feature all three bass masters displaying their strengths while certain songs on the CD like Classical Thump give extra room for Victor with his trademark thumb and slap technique and Milano which features Stanley’s beautiful Arco melodies on upright bass with some speed of light flourishes. One of my favorite songs is Lil’ Victa which breaks into a insane jam of popping, strumming chords harmonics and solo lines with spectacular support on drums by Ronald Bruner, Jr. Speaking of the supporting cast, the list is an all-star lineup including George Duke, Chick Corea and Nashville “A” list players and folks I have had the pleasure of working with Derico Watson, J.D. Blair and Karlton Taylor.
This CD is a treat and joy to listen to. Even if you are not a bass player you will appreciate the grooves, melodies, arrangements and musical collaboration. I highly recommend adding it to your CD collection. You can find a few live video snippets on YouTube, check it out. These guys are just as good live as in the studio. What about a follow up recording, guys?
